The Framework

What is Internal Family Systems?

Internal Family Systems (IFS) is an evidence-based model of psychotherapy developed by Dr. Richard Schwartz in the 1980s. It has since become one of the most widely practiced and researched approaches to healing trauma, managing anxiety, and cultivating self-compassion.

At its core, IFS holds a simple but powerful idea: the mind is naturally multiple. We all have “parts” — distinct sub-personalities that carry different feelings, beliefs, and motivations. Rather than seeing inner conflict as a sign that something is wrong, IFS views it as a natural expression of a system that is trying to protect you.

When we approach our parts with curiosity instead of judgment, they can begin to relax, let go of extreme roles, and allow the core Self to lead.

The three types of parts

Managers

Proactive protectors that try to keep you in control and prevent painful feelings from surfacing. They show up as planning, people-pleasing, perfectionism, or intellectualizing.

Firefighters

Reactive protectors that spring into action when painful feelings break through. They use distraction, numbing, or impulsive behavior to put out emotional fires quickly.

Exiles

Vulnerable parts that carry pain, shame, fear, or trauma from the past. They are often young parts that were overwhelmed and pushed out of awareness by the protectors.

Self: the calm at the center

In IFS, Self is not a part — it is the essence of who you are when your parts step back. Self is characterized by the 8 C's: Curiosity, Calm, Clarity, Compassion, Confidence, Courage, Creativity, and Connectedness.

Everyone has Self, and it cannot be damaged. The goal of IFS is not to eliminate parts but to help them trust Self enough to unburden the pain they carry and find new, healthier roles within the system.

How PartsWork helps

PartsWork is an AI companion designed to help you practice the IFS framework between therapy sessions — or as a gentle introduction to the model. It guides you through part-identification exercises, helps you explore your inner landscape with curiosity, and supports you in building a relationship with your parts.

It is not a replacement for a licensed therapist, but it can be a powerful tool for daily self-reflection and developing the habit of turning inward with compassion.
